Parent Governor

We really need your help! As you all know, every school in the UK has a governing body that supports the running of the school to ensure it can deliver the best education for the children. We currently have a ‘parent’ vacancy on our governing body.

Our governing body consists of a friendly and supportive group of individuals who really care about Pinewood and the education provided. Although we are an outstanding school, we are constantly looking to how we can further improve and are a governing body that is outward looking and willing to learn from each other. Finding parents and carers with the desire and time availability has always been a struggle for us here, but it is so essential to have the voice of actual parents and carers on this panel. I urge anyone who might be at all interested to give me a ring to talk it through as it might be something that you would really enjoy. Whether you know anything about education or not, your application would be warmly welcomed. We offer biscuits and a smile!

Applications are welcomed from parents and carers that would like an opportunity to understand how the school works, to be able to influence decisions taken and to really involve yourself in the bigger educational picture. It is a strategic role that means you really would be influential in making a difference to the direction of travel that our outstanding school makes in the future. We welcome applications from new parents or existing parents from any class in school from F1-Y2.

We are looking for parents who have children at the school. The term ‘parent’ relates to any person who has ‘parental responsibility’ as defined by the Section 576 of the Education Act 1996.  If you have any queries about your eligibility as a parent, please contact the headteacher for further advice.

We are looking for parents who have the skills required to contribute to effective governance and the success of the school. Your skills may include personal attributes, qualities and capabilities, such as the ability and willingness to learn and develop new skills. We are looking for someone who has a commitment to ensuring our nurturing and successful school is the very best it can be.

The wide range of matters of which Governing bodies are responsible come under three main headings:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Governors need a strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children. They also need the inquisitiveness to question and analyse, and the willingness to learn. They also need some time to commit to the role. This would involve your attendance at meetings, visiting school on occasions as a link governor (if possible) and the undertaking of governor training courses at the outset.

All this said, it is not as daunting as it sounds and we can work with you with flexibility in terms of what time you can offer. The most important aspect of the role is attendance 2 times a term at a governor body meeting.

Our parent governors serve a four-year term of office (even if your child leaves the school during this time).  We meet three times a year as a whole governing body and have two sub committees Strategic and Pupils and Finance and Personnel and these meet once per term.  You may have more of an interest in the education and pupils side of things or you may prefer to be involved in finance and personnel – we can be flexible in terms of the committee that you join.

We offer a full induction package and our Chair of Governors, Rachel Makey is very supportive in helping governors grow into their role.  We also welcome the opportunity for prospective governors to talk to the Chair of Governors Rachel Makey and/or the Head teacher before completing a nomination form. We can give you a real insight into the role.

Parents/carers from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community, and with disabilities, are usually under-represented on governing bodies and in the County. The school would like to encourage nominations from under-represented groups in our community.

All new and re-appointed school governors are required to complete a declaration of eligibility form.

If you wish to complete a nomination form to become a parent governor, you need to:

- Check that you are eligible by reading the enclosed qualifications and disqualifications criteria.

- Complete the nomination form (once you are satisfied that you are eligible to become a governor).

- Include a statement, up to 80 words, about yourself, the skills and commitment you can bring to the governing body and why you would like to become a governor.  You do not have to complete this section, but if you don’t you may put yourself at a disadvantage if there is an election.  All words over 80 will be deleted and not used in the election process. A photograph would also be helpful.

Each nomination must be received by email or delivered to the school office. Please send your nominations to:  by Friday 1st March 2024, ‘Nomination for Parent Governor.’ We will place your nomination into an internal ballot box within the school office.

Your nomination should be acknowledged by the headteacher within two working days after the closing date.  If you do not receive this acknowledgement, please contact the school office.

In accordance with the School Governance (Constitution) (England) Regulations 2012, an elected member of the Local Authority (LA) or school staff who are paid to work at the school for more than 500 hours in any consecutive twelve month period are not eligible for election or appointment as parent governors.  However, they can vote in parent governor elections if they are parents of children attending the school and can be governors at another school.

An election will be held if more nominations are received than the number of vacancies.  For the purpose of the election, ballot papers will be sent to all parents or carers with children at the school, together with any details that you and other nominees have provided.  This procedure will be explained to you by the headteacher should an election be necessary.  Historically, this has rarely been necessary at Pinewood.

If you have any further queries about the role of parent governor, please contact me through the school office/or my email or contact our chair of governors  Rachel Makey ( or  contact Nottinghamshire County Council Governor Services on 0115 804 4666.

We have an excellent governing body with a vast array of expertise but we are always looking for new ideas and your input would be valued.  Although a voluntary role, this is a way of really helping making a difference to the lives and education of our children.
